The jailing of a mother for an offensive social media post should be the final straw. It’s time to stand up to state authoritarianism. Connolly’s sentence is just the latest in a series of draconian jail terms meted out for offensive posts online, with judges openly stating that their intention is to “set an example” to others who might transgress. Worse still, the defendants are all being advised to pleased guilty to avoid being on remand indefinitely, and so apologists for this kind of state overreach are able to claim that justice has been served.
We are moving in the same direction in Canada with the possible passing of Bill C-63. Please sign e-petition 5160 to say NO.
